Capitalist Hero - the Novel-Chapter 2-By Roger Martinez
The wind chilled Adam's newly shorn scalp a he walked to his brother's
house. Barely October and it was already freezing. Adam thought it was
amazing that only a couple inches of hair could insulate your head so
well.
Disturbed by his resemblance to his father, Adam impulsively shaved his
head. If he could see the likeness, then so could others. It was more
of a miscalculation than a mistake.
By shaving his head, Adam now resembled his father's more recognizable appearance. His father wore a
jailhouse haircut during his lengthy televised trial and at his LIVE
execution. A jailhouse haircut that was eeriely similar to Adam's do it
yourself haircut.
Horrified by the result, Adam contemplated skipping his nephew's
birthday party; but he had so looked forward to giving his nephew his
present. He fingered the gold treasury bond certificate tucked away in
his jacket pocket.
It was remarkable how closely it resembled real gold, or at least what
Adam remembered real gold resembled. The last gold he saw were coins
rended from the lining of his father's suit coat during his father's
arrest. Coins, he would later learn, were South African kuggerand.
To Adam, the 60 year Treasury Bond, was more beautiful than any gold
coin he remembered. Trimmed with gold coloring the certificate was a
bevy of detail. It was checkered with national treasures and
recreations of past national glories. In the middle staring back at
him, was the President's handsome face. The artist may have taken some
liberties: his nose was a touch smaller, his jaw line a bit stronger, a
few years shaved off; but overall a very accurate rendering.
The bond's beauty was surpassed only by its value. It cost Adam 1
thousand New Dollars; but in 60 years, when it matured, it would pay out
1 million. The bond deserved to be on display for everyone's
enjoyment, but because of its value it would be hidden away in a vault
somewhere or buried ten feet in the side yard.
One thing Troubled Adam. There was no line for the bond. And there was a
line for everything. No matter how inconsequential an item was, there
was always a line.
Adam contributed this lack of interest to the fact that most people were
very present oriented. In 60 years, when the bond matured, Adam would
most likely be dead or at the very least debilitated to the point where
he would have little utility for a million dollars. However, his nephew,
Tommy, would be only 70. Surely, at such a spry age he would make use
of the money.
It was sad that people failed to plan ahead for their families. To Adam,
The opportunity was obvious. His father had been a financial genius;
perhaps he had inherited similar traits.
